Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, began his tour of several factories in 10th of Ramadan City with a visit to the Utopia Pharmaceutical Industries factory. Accompanying him were Eng. Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport; Dr. Ali El Ghamrawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority; Dr. Nahed Youssef, Chairperson of the Industrial Development Authority; and Ms. Doaa Salima, Executive Director of the Industrial Modernization Center. They were welcomed by Dr. El Saied Kamel, Chairman of Utopia Pharma.
At the start of the visit, the Prime Minister reiterated the strong support given by the Egyptian state to the industrial sector in general, recognizing its vital role in achieving economic, developmental, and social goals, improving economic indicators, and creating more job opportunities for youth.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the pharmaceutical industry is among the state’s top priority sectors. He explained that the government is working to provide more incentives and facilities to attract investments into this important industry, in line with the directives of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to localize and deepen pharmaceutical manufacturing in Egypt and transfer advanced technologies to support the sector. These efforts aim to secure the local market’s pharmaceutical needs, increase exports, and expand into new international markets.
He also highlighted the recent achievement of the Egyptian Drug Authority in obtaining the World Health Organization’s “Maturity Level 3” accreditation in the pharmaceutical sector, noting that this milestone reflects the state’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Egypt’s leading regional and international role in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Eng. Kamel El-Wazir also pointed to the initiatives and incentives being provided to support pharmaceutical manufacturing in Egypt, helping to increase production capacity and strengthen the competitiveness of Egyptian pharmaceutical products.
During the tour, Dr. El Saied Kamel provided an overview of the Utopia factory, explaining that the facility is built on an area of 18,000 m², with the first phase covering 8,000 m² and an investment cost of approximately EGP 1.35 billion. The factory includes six production lines for solid tablets, capsules, syrups, sachets, and powder filling.
Dr. El Saied Kamel noted that Utopia Pharma is one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the Egyptian market and that the factory was among those subjected to surprise inspections by the World Health Organization as part of the requirements for obtaining the “Maturity Level 3” quality accreditation.
He added that the company’s strategy focuses on reducing imports of finished pharmaceutical products and increasing exports by registering and marketing products that were previously imported, while transferring the required technologies for local manufacturing to achieve self-sufficiency and export surplus production, with a local manufacturing component reaching 90%.
He also highlighted the agreement signed between the drug authorities in Egypt and Sudan and Utopia Pharma to host four Sudanese factories and manufacture medicines for export, helping Sudan achieve pharmaceutical self-sufficiency during its crisis period.
During the inspection tour of the production areas and manufacturing stages, Dr. Wael Abdel Fattah, Factory Manager, explained that the factory currently produces 120 million packs annually and is fully prepared to double its production capacity.
He added that the factory currently manufactures 185 products, including 73 registered and marketed products, while procedures are ongoing for the remaining 112 products. Company sales in 2024 exceeded EGP 2 billion, while exports reached EGP 320 million.
The Prime Minister also reviewed several strategic medicines produced by the company, including treatments related to cardiology, hypertension, gastroenterology, pediatrics, neurology, and other therapeutic areas.
Dr. Wael Abdel Fattah further explained that the factory successfully localized the production of 19 products that were previously fully imported, with an annual import value of EGP 840 million, providing high-quality local alternatives at less than half the price for consumers.
The delegation also toured the warehouse facilities for production inputs and finished products prepared for the Egyptian market and export operations.
Dr. Noha Abdel Shakour, Board Member and Director of Development & Utopia Training Academy, presented the academy’s efforts in training and qualifying graduates for the labor market. She noted that 11 cooperation protocols were signed with Egyptian universities and the Pharmacists Syndicate, and more than 500 recent pharmacy graduates were trained during 2024 across various operational and scientific office functions.
At the conclusion of the visit, the Prime Minister took a commemorative group photo with the company’s management and employees, reaffirming the state’s commitment to localizing and advancing pharmaceutical manufacturing in Egypt while increasing local content across pharmaceutical products. He also expressed his appreciation to all employees for their efforts in supporting the state’s vision for this vital industry.
